The primary reproductive organs are known as the gonads: the testes(singular, testis) in the male and the ovaries (singular ovary ) in the female. These gonads have dual functions.
Functions of the Gonads
Gametogenesis: This is defined as the production of reproductive cells, gametes. These gametes are the spermatozoa (sperms) in males and the ova ( singular, ovum) in females.
Secretion of Steroid Hormones: The gonads secrete steroid hormones, also known as sex hormones. These hormones are namely androgens, such as testosterone and dihydrotestosterone [DHT], estrogens (mainly estradiol), and progesterone. Both sexes have these hormones, but androgens are the predominant hormones in males, while estrogen and progesterone are the predominant hormones in females.
